Match Report – 15th January – Aveley 1 Gidea Park 6
Football is a cruel, cruel, lady. Just like the missus praising you for decorating the kitchen but to then criticise the lack of a dishwasher, Aveley pulled out all the bells and whistles going forward in the first half, only to concede two extremely soft goals. Perhaps they were too busy stepping back to admire their movement of the ball into goalscoring positions, but they failed to perform the basics of defending set pieces. The crowd were cooing and groaning in equal amounts at chance after chance for Aveley. But winners like Gidea Park have the ability to take a pounding but at the same time lethally punishing sloppiness. 2-0 half time had the police arriving after numerous reports of daylight robbery.
The second half wasn’t as productive for Aveley despite most of the possession being theirs. With 20 minutes of the second half gone Gidea Park had been let-off with a caution and proceeded to rob Aveley of all their possessions including their heart when Aveley went 3-0 down. At 5-0 down Aveley rallied to score a penalty but unfortunately they didn’t have the last word.
The overwhelming feeling at the end was how proud the Aveley parents were of the quality of 90% of their play. Some days you have to hold your hand up to luck not being on your side and acknowledge that a ruthless opponent may be wobbling like a jelly but they are still capable of hitting back in the knackers.
Next league game Sunday 12th February.
